  1. Jasper County Historical Museum Brown Bag History Talk: The Mershon House in Newton

    October 11, 12:00 PM - 1:00 PM @ Jasper County Historical Museum

Local historians Bob Van Drimmelen and Joan Tyler will discuss the storied history of Newton’s Marshon House and the Marshon family’s most famous member: Madame Emma Mershon Konchine. Born in Newton she was a talented singer who in 1894 married a Russian Count. After moving to the Count’s home country her life was intertwined in global events. By 1920 the Russian Tsar was dead, and life in post-revolution Russian was not good for the Russian nobility. In Newton there were rumors that Emma was starving and suffering, so the people of Newton raised money to bring her back home. Attend the Brown Bag on Wednesday to find out if she made it home or not.
