In partnership with the Newton Community School District, the Newton Police Department has two School Resource Officers, Officer Ashlyn Breckenridge and Officer Kyle Lovan.
The SRO program was developed in 1994 and has been a positive addition to the department and community ever since. In 2019, a second SRO position was added.
The primary function of the SROs is to serve as intervention and prevention officers for all Newton Community School District students. The SROs are also available for parents and school staff who have concerns regarding students.
The SROs maintain offices at Newton Senior High School and Berg Middle School, allowing open access for students with law enforcement needs. The SROs also receive administrative referrals from school administrators and, depending on the offense, take the appropriate action.
The SROs are involved with various meetings, special projects, presentations, training and special enforcement efforts throughout the year pertaining to their duties. The SROs also are actively involved with school programs and attend functions to build and maintain relationships with students and parents.
