Annually, the Newton Police Department offers Safety City for all kindergarten students.
Safety City is a miniature city with streets, crosswalks, stop signs, traffic signals and buildings that allows students to experience various traffic situations in a safe and protected manner. The program teaches kindergarten children how to properly cross the street by remembering three key words, “Stop, Look, and Listen” as well as other safety tips.
Safety City is held each September with approximately 300 kindergarten students being served from four elementary schools in Newton and Colfax. The event is coordinated by the Newton Police Department’s Traffic Safety Officer and the School Resource Officer with assistance from other Newton Officers. Each child is presented with a junior police badge and receives a certificate for completing the Safety City course.
