Welcome to 1000 Books Before Kindergarten at the Newton Public Library!
It's never too early to start reading to your child! The 1000 books before kindergarten program is designed to be simple and encourage making reading a daily habit, starting from your baby's very first days.
To register, simply stop by the library and sign your child up to receive a book log. You may count the same book multiple times, as many children enjoy hearing the same story over and over again! You may also count books read to your child at daycare, preschool, or library storytime. There is also a helpful 1000 Books Before Kindergarten app, available in your app store or iTunes. Using this app, simply scan the publisher barcode on the back of the book (not the library barcode) to keep track of the books that you have read to your child.
When your book log is full, or you reach the 100 level on your phone app, stop by the library and your child will receive a sticker for every 100 books read. You will receive another book log at this time, with space to record the next 100 books.
When your child reaches the halfway mark at 500 books, they receive a free book to keep!
At 1000 books we will take their photograph for the newspaper and the library's Facebook page (with parental permission) and they will receive a gift bag with educational toys and a book for completing the program.
Why 1000 books? We don't want this program to be a burden to parents or a competition, but 1000 books is a great goal to strive for. If you read one book a day to your child, starting from day one, you will reach 1000 books at age 3!
