In observance of Independence Day, City offices and most facilities will be closed on Thursday, July 4. Below is a listing of closures and hours for a variety of departments and facilities, as well as their hours on Friday, July 5 and Saturday, July 6.
- City Hall will be closed on Thursday, July 4 and Friday, July 5
- Public Works, Community Development, and Community Services offices will be closed on Thursday, July 4 and Friday, July 5
- The Newton Police Department and Newton Fire Department business offices will be closed on Thursday, July 4 and Friday, July 5
- The Newton Public Library will be closed on Thursday, July 4; they will be open 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Friday, July 5 and 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, July 6 (normal business hours)
- The Newton Sanitary Landfill will be closed on Thursday, July 4; the landfill will be open 7:30 a.m. - 3:15 p.m. on Friday, July 5 and 8 to 11 a.m. on Saturday, July 6
- Maytag Pool will be open 1 p.m. - 6:45 p.m. on Thursday, July 4 (No lap swim at noon); the pool will be open normal pool hours on Friday, July 5 and Saturday, July 6
All City of Newton Fourth of July activities will take place at Agnes Patterson Memorial Park. The Independence Day Home Run Derby, sponsored by Hamilton Glass, is a fun, free event for all ages at Agnes Patterson Memorial Park on Independence Day. Registration begins at 12 p.m. and the derby will start at 1 p.m. sharp. The Co-Ed Sand Volleyball Tournament, sponsored by Magnum Automotive, will take place at Agnes Patterson Memorial Park at 1 p.m. on July 4. Kid Zone Inflatables, sponsored by Community Heights Church, begin at 4:30 p.m. and live entertainment from DJ Ray, sponsored by FNNB Bank and Iowa Speedway, begins at 5:30 p.m. Fireworks sponsored by Bolton & Menk and Arcosa, Inc., begin at dusk.
