Due to a failed switch on a transformer at Alliant Energy's Newton substation, there are several areas of the community without power - mostly on the east side of town. This includes businesses, school buildings, homes, etc. Alliant Energy crews are on scene working to restore power.
Newton Christian School is NOT dismissing classes today. There will be no bus service this afternoon but students will have a full day of class.
Newton Community School District has canceled classes for the day due to the power outage. All schools have been dismissed. Transportation will run regular bus routes. For all other students, please pick up your children as soon as possible. Until then, they will remain safe at their school buildings.
Some local businesses are closed, or are considering closing, due to the power outage; please be patient and understanding.
