Historic downtown Newton was very close to the factory district, which became the washing machine capital of the world. As the different companies turned out washing machines and invented the concept for the modern washing machine, commerce grew and changed around them.
Newton Main Street has wrapped the new utility boxes with images of history, thanks to the generous local donations of Newton enthusiasts. The Newton Main Street design committee was able to pick pictures that would reflect history from that particular vantage point, as you stand in real-time and think back on what it must have originally looked like.
