The Newton Fire Department responded to a house fire in the 400 block of W 7th St N Sunday, 1/31/2021, at approximately 11:00 AM. The resident called 911 stating the house was on fire and the call ended. When the Newton Police Department arrived, no reporting party was found outside the home. Fire crews rescued the caller immediately upon arrival. The initial page went to the Fire Department at 11:14 AM and the rescue was made by 11:21 AM.
The injured party was taken to Mercy One Newton by ambulance and was flown to Mercy One Des Moines by Mercy Air Transport due to weather conditions. The patient was later flown to the University of Iowa Hospital Burn Unit after weather conditions improved. The patient remains in serious condition at the University of Iowa Hospital. Fire crews remained on scene until approximately 3:00 PM to completely extinguish the fire.
The home received significant damage from the fire.
The Newton Fire Department was assisted by the Newton Police Department, Kellogg Fire Department, and Baxter Fire Department. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
