[ARCHIVED] Fire Extinguisher Basics for Businesses

Over the past two months, the most common request for information has been on fire extinguishers in local businesses. Here is some basic information:

  1. Fire extinguishers are required in all businesses. For most businesses, a 5# fire extinguisher will meet the minimum requirements. Those businesses with a higher risk for fire or flammable processes may require larger extinguishers.
  2. Fire extinguishers must be kept in a visible location with easy access. If a fire starts, time is of the essence, and having the fire extinguisher in the open will save precious seconds. The code requires maximum travel distance to a fire extinguisher to be less than 75 feet.
  3. Fire extinguishers must be maintained, inspected, and tagged annually.

Many businesses specialize in fire extinguisher maintenance and inspection. The Newton Fire Department does not provide fire extinguisher services. Locally, Gralnek-Dunitz Co. (641-792-1484) sells and inspects fire extinguishers. You can search online for other companies that provide this service.
