With the warm weather melting snow and ice around Newton, firefighters took the opportunity to train in surface ice rescue at the Izaak Walton League's pond on March 9.
“It is a great opportunity for department members to get in the ice rescue suits and spend some time practicing victim removal techniques” said Fire Chief Jarrod Wellik. “The ice this time of year still looks like it may hold a person up, and it may for a distance, then give way without notice."
The Newton Fire Department urges people to be safe during this time of the year when ice is melting off of local ponds. The water temperatures are still very cold and falling through the ice can quickly become a life threatening issue.
