The City of Newton has received $2,000 grant from the Iowa Department of Natural Resources to be used for a community-based tree planting program for derecho recovery tree planting.

The Derecho Community Forestry Grant Program provides reimbursable grants, that require a $1 for $1 match in local funds, ranging from $500 to $5,000 that are to be used for the purchase and planting of trees suitable to Iowa.

“Our goal with the City’s project is to begin the process of growing our overall tree canopy in four of our smaller "pocket" parks here in Newton,” said Nick Cummins, the City of Newton's Parks Operations Superintendent

“With the massive tree loss from last year’s derecho, along with the loss of Ash trees, these neighborhood parks are in much need of a fresh start, especially in regards to tree plantings," stated Cummins.

The City is planning to plant 12 different species of trees in Denniston Knolls Park, Hillcrest Park, Callison Park and Lincoln Park. A total of forty trees will be planted between the four parks.

As part of the project, local community groups are assisted City staff with the planting, including local Girl Scout Troops, Cub Scout Troops and 4-H groups. The youth, along with other volunteers, were instructed by a certified arborist, on tree planting techniques, mulching and watering.
