The City of Newton Community Services Department has two opportunities for volunteers to help clean-up on Wednesday, March 9. These initial volunteer clean-up opportunities are ahead of another possible snowfall on Thursday, which could further cover some of the debris for several days.
The City may share more information on additional volunteer opportunities later as the clean-up work progresses. Don't hesitate to contact the City of Newton Community Services office at 641-792-6622, ext. 2304 with any questions.
The City of Newton is seeking volunteers to assist with some initial storm clean-up starting on Wednesday, March 9th, between 8 am and 3 pm at Union Cemetery. City crews will be removing the larger tree limbs in Union Cemetery. Volunteers are needed to walk the entire cemetery and pick up smaller branches and other storm debris strewn about the cemetery. The debris will be put into smaller piles on the cemetery roads so City crews can load and remove them. Volunteers will not be using any power equipment. Volunteers are reminded to park on hard surfaces only to minimize further turf damage.
Volunteers can also assist on Wednesday, March 9th, at the Softball Complex at 500 N 19th Ave E between 8 am and 3 pm. City crews will not be at this location that day, but volunteers can walk the entire park and pile small branches and other storm debris in the parking lot. City crews will then load and remove this debris at a later date. Debris from the adjacent farm fields should not be retrieved and piled in the park. As with Union Cemetery, volunteers will not be using any power equipment, nor should they bring their own to the use on City property.
