[ARCHIVED] City to Flush Hydrants on April 28 & 29

hydrant flushing

The City of Newton Utilities Department will be flushing hydrants on Friday, April 28 and Saturday, April 29 during the overnight hours. Hydrants are flushed several times a year to clear the water mains of internal corrosion and residue which naturally builds up in water mains.

On Friday, hydrants north of 1st Avenue and in the Bittersweet Subdivision will be flushed between 10 p.m. – 6 a.m.; on Saturday, hydrants south of 1st Avenue will be flushed. While no interruptions in water service will occur, customers may experience some drop in pressure or some discoloration of their water. The discoloration will clear up in a few minutes if the cold-water tap is allowed to run. Do not run hot water or do laundry until cold water side is clear.

Not all hydrants will be flushed, only those that provide the greatest flow or are on the end of a line are opened and flushed. If Newton WaterWorks customers in Newton, Lambs Grove or surrounding areas have questions or concerns, they can contact the WaterWorks customer service division at 641-792-2003.
