City of Newton - Community Development

Posted on: August 7, 2023

The Newton Hotel-Motel Tourism Grant Program is an exciting initiative that provides funding for community projects, events, and initiatives through the local hotel-motel tax. This program ensures the application process is consistent for each request and supports local projects.

The City of Newton is committed to funding projects with a tourism-related component, accountability, and leverage from other funding sources. The aim is to encourage the development, continuation, and promotion of projects, events, and initiatives that attract visitors from outside Newton, especially those likely to stay overnight in local hotels or motels. Preference will be given to one-time projects encouraging overnight stays, demonstrating economic impact in the community, and promoting community enhancement and improved quality of life.

The program is open to organizations in Newton that host events, develop projects, maintain sites, or conduct educational efforts that highlight the community and its assets and ultimately attract out-of-town visitors. The program is not intended for individuals, business ventures, debt retirement, or operating expenses. The event or initiative must take place within city limits. Grants are not intended as an annual revenue stream for any group.

The grant program has two application deadlines each year: October 1 and April 1. City Council must submit and approve applications before the event or initiative occurs. Grant amounts may range from $500 to $2,500 and should represent no more than 25% of the total project budget.

All applicants must meet with Community Development Department Staff before applying to ensure their application meets eligibility requirements. Applications will be reviewed by City Staff and then placed on a City Council agenda for action within 30 days of the application deadline. The applicant must have a representative available to answer questions from elected officials at the City Council meeting, during which their application will be reviewed.

Recipients must show proof of expense commitments (agreements, contracts, etc.) and explain expenditures to receive funding before an event or project. To receive funding as reimbursement, recipients must present receipts for spending along with an explanation or final budget. Requests are due within 30 days of the event.

The Newton Hotel-Motel Tourism Grant Program is committed to supporting projects that enhance the community and attract visitors to the city. You can learn more about the grant program here:
