Members of the Newton Historic Preservation Commission, along with City staff Erin Chambers, traveled to Greenfield, Iowa on June 13th for the presentation of the Newton Downtown Historic District to the State Nominations Review Committee. After "making the case" for the Newton Downtown Historic District, committee members asked questions and offered ways to improve the application. The State Nominations Review Committee, then, unanimously voted on a motion recommending that the Newton Downtown Historic District be placed on the National Register of Historic Places. The nomination materials, along with this state recommendation, now moves on for review at the national level. As part of the trip to Greenfield, the Newton representatives stopped and viewed the Freedom Rock (pictured). From Left: Larry Hurto, Mary Jo Niskin, Erin Chambers, Rita Reinheimer, and Sue Smith.
