The Newton Parks and Grounds have planned several activities and specials as part of a new event they are calling “So Long Summer Weekend of Fun.” This weekend-long event is designed to get people out and using the park system the weekend before school resumes. The event features several activities and specials at different locations throughout the weekend. Nathan Unsworth, Administrative Park Superintendent, said “All the featured events are free and we have discounted the entry fee to the Maytag Pool on Saturday and to Westwood Golf Course on Sunday. We want to ensure families have the opportunity to get out and enjoy our great facilities one more time this summer.”
The fun beings on Friday, August 15th with a special event entitled “A Night of Magic at Maytag.” The free family-friendly event is sponsored by the Newton YMCA and will feature The Magic and Illusions of Eric Michaels. The show begins at 7:00 p.m. at the Maytag Bowl.
On Saturday, August 16th, the Parks Department will be hosting the Park Dash 5K Fun Run/Walk starting from Sunset Park at 8:00 a.m. This is a free event and designed to encourage people to get moving. There is no entry fee, no timer, and the event is self-supported (meaning participants should bring their own water bottles). People are just encouraged to join the group and complete a 5k whether they are walking or running. Starting at noon on Saturday, the Maytag Pool will be offering a special discounted entry fee of $2.00. The special rate runs all day. The day will end with a Damon Dotson Concert at the Maytag Bowl starting at 8:00 p.m. sponsored by First Newton National Bank, Eye Care Center of Newton, and Noble Auto Group. Damon Dotson, an Okoboji native, is a well-known artist throughout the Midwest and has opened for several acts including Willie Nelson, Matt Nathanson, the Beach Boys, and B.B. King.
