Senate File 489 was approved by the Iowa Legislature and Governor Terry Branstad signed the fireworks legalization bill into law Tuesday, May 9.

You can read the Senate File 489 in full here:

The bill allows fireworks to be sold all over the state of Iowa. The bill gives city councils and county boards of supervisors the authority to ban or restrict the use of fireworks, but it does not allow them to limit their sale.

The City of Newton asked for citizen input on an its upcoming decision on the use of fireworks in Newton. The unscientific poll asked the following questions...
  • Do you favor or oppose the use of fireworks within city limits?
  • Please share your reason for supporting/opposing the use of fireworks within city limits.
  • If you oppose the use of fireworks, are there places inside the city limits where consumer fireworks would be okay?
The City also gathered basic demographic information included age, gender and Zip Code.

There were 1011 residents of the 50208 Zip Code who completed the survey; 63% of those were in favor of the use of fireworks and 37% were opposed.

A first consideration of ordinances regarding the regulation of the use and sales of fireworks will be made by City Council at the May 15 City Council Meeting.
