[ARCHIVED] Historic Preservation Commission Update

Historic Preservation Commission Maytag Park

The Historic Preservation Commission held their regular meeting on December 4, 2017. They were introduced to a project proposed within the historic Maytag Park. Rotary Club would like to create a paved terrace area for additional seating in the area of Maytag Bowl. The terrace would be adjacent to the existing parking area. The State Historic Preservation Office has been provided a copy of the proposal. HPC is waiting to hear their comments before offering a formal comment or motion on the matter.

The HPC also reviewed the proposed tower by Alliant Energy at 2600 N 4th AVE E for impact on historic areas. Given the tower is not located in the vicinity of any historic structures or districts, they approved a motion indicating the proposal had no historic impact.

Finally, the commission has selected Mark Hallam to serve as the HPC representative on the Newton Main Street Board, taking over for Larry Hurto who has served in the capacity for the past 2 years.
