Three of the HPC members attended the National Historic Preservation Conference held in Des Moines in July. This was an excellent opportunity to get to attend a national conference at little cost. Commissioners shared the things they learned from the conference with the rest of the board at their regular meeting on August 6th.
Planning for the 2019 Preserve Iowa Conference (the statewide preservation conference) is well underway. The conference theme has been selected by the State Historic Preservation Office- “Reinvention through Rehabilitation.” Conference sessions will tie back to the selected theme, and Newton (and Jasper County) can point to lots of examples of how historic preservation has been an integral part of rehabilitation, reinvention, and economic development over the past 10 years.
