Public Works - Parks Update

The Parks Operations Staff has brought in a load of engineered mulch for the playgrounds throughout Newton. The mulch used for playgrounds is different than conventional mulch. It is made using soft varieties of wood to add cushion, as well as prevent splinters. The mulch base throughout the playgrounds is inspected during the monthly playground inspections and must be maintained to a certain thickness to meet safety requirements.

The staff has continued maintenance work throughout Maytag Pool. Some of the tables in the concession area have been reorganized help alleviate congestion and the paint surfaces are being repainted.

A recycling program in the City of Newton parks system because of a partnership between the Parks Operations division, O.P.E.N, and Dodd’s Trash & Recycling. City staff is testing the recycling program in Maytag Park this month. Assuming the program is successful, more recycling containers will be added to more parks.
