[ARCHIVED] Historic Preservation Commission January Update

Historic Preservation Commission Update

The Historic Preservation Commission met on Monday, January 7, for their regular monthly meeting. Officers were selected - Larry Hurto and Mary Jo Niskin will continue to serve as Chair and Vice Chair, respectively. Tanya Michener will continue to serve as Historic Preservation Commission liaison on the Newton Main Street Board.

The commission is gathering information for the required annual report to the State Historic Preservation Office. This is a requirement to maintain their Certified Local Government (CLG) status, which makes Newton eligible for additional grants.

Finally, the commission accepted a donation of $150.00 from a Sunbonnet Questers chapter to be used toward preservation efforts. At their meeting, the commission unanimously approved a motion to pursue the creation of plaques for the contributing buildings located within the downtown. The Sunbonnet Questors’ donation, along with funds from the coloring book project, will make the project a reality.
