Newton Arboretum and Botanical Gardens
The Arboretum is offering a unique opportunity to tour the grounds with our horticulturist this season. There are 5 GETs scheduled for 2022. Learn about new plants, design plans, and future projects during a relaxed stroll through the Arboretum. Attend all 5 to see how the gardens change through the year!

Regular Board Meetings are typically scheduled at 6:30 PM on the 2nd and 4th Mondays of the month (with a few exceptions).

Pay down your fines with a food! During the week of May 16th, we'll waive overdue material fines in exchange for a food donation. Donations will not be accepted for missing or damaged library materials, and wifi hotspot fines are not eligible. Donations must be canned or otherwise non-perishable food items, and should not be expired. All donations will be given to the Salvation Army Food Bank in Newton. 1 item = $1.00 in fines!
Get a jump start on your 2022 reading goal with our new adult book club! This book club will read popular titles in a variety of genres, and is sure to have something for every reader. Copies of the monthly title can be picked up at the library information desk. New members are always welcome. The May selection is, "Wuthering Heights" by Emily Bronte.
Work on your resume, edit your cover letter, or complete an online application during our job-seeker support hours. Our Public Services Librarian will provide dedicated support for job-seekers on Wednesday afternoons. Join the Avey Grouws Duo for a live blues music concert at the library! This event is free to attend and will be held outdoors on the library lawn. Attendees are encouraged to bring a lawn chair or blanket to sit on. In the event of inclement weather, the concert will be moved inside the library meeting room. Music lovers of all ages are welcome to attend. This program is sponsored by the Arts Connection, South Skunk Blues Society, and the Newton Public Library Foundation.
Storytime for newborns to 18 months with their caregiver. The storytime will run about 15 minutes and include an open playtime at the end.
In-person storytime for children ages 18 to 36 months with a caregiver. Storytime will last for 20 minutes with a simple craft following. Siblings are welcome to attend. Questions? Please contact Phyllis Peter at 641-792-4108.
Join trained Family History Specialists for a free family history course at the Newton Public Library! This course will provide an introduction to the basics of creating a personal family history. Topics will include gathering family documents, using online databases, and research tips. This introductory course will consist of four unique classes (May 11, 17, 24, & 31) and participants should plan on attending all four classes.
One-on-one tutoring with a consultant will also be available during the course. Attendees should bring a charged laptop, if they have one. This program is sponsored by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
Make a cute and cozy home fit for a frog (or toad!) Join us for this in-person crafting program where we'll be painting clay flower pots and turning them into outdoor toad shelters. The City of Newton Community Services Department - Parks & Recreation is partnering with Kinetic Edge Physical Therapy in hosting walks for seniors 55 years and older. Bring a friend or make a friend while getting some refreshments, then we encourage you to get outside, walk, and enjoy the scenery of both Maytag Park and Agnes Patterson.
The co-ed league has been split into an early summer league and a late summer league. Each consists of eight games plus a league tournament.
Westwood Golf Course
The Westwood Golf Course Shambles Tournament on Saturday, May 21 is a four person team selected drive best ball tournament. All players will tee off, select the best drive and play their own ball into the hole from the selected tee shot. Scoring is two of four best balls per hole. Cost is $30/player with carts available for $14/player if needed. Call 641-792-3087 to register your team.
