Mark your calendars for the Newton YMCA's Family Fall Festival, happening on October 28th from 6-8PM. Just like previous years, the event will have trunk-or-treating, fun activities and free food for the family! Dress up in costumes and come out to enjoy a FREE family friendly event.
This year Beggars' Night falls on Monday, October 31. Be safe and have fun as you trick-or-treat through Newton's neighborhoods from 6 - 8 p.m.!

The October theme is "Thrills & Chills!" and includes a selection of thrillers, mysteries, and spooky books, just in time for Halloween. The craft is a painted coffin candy box. Registration opens September 26. Ages 18+

Newton Public Library
Now is the perfect time to start scanning those old family photos! Drop-in on the second Monday morning of the month to learn about our Memory Lab Digitization Equipment and have our Public Services Librarian scan your photos. Attendees may bring up to 15 photos per visit and a flash drive to store their scans on.

Storytime for newborns to 18 months with their caregiver. The storytime will run about 15 minutes and include an open playtime at the end.

Enjoy a cup of coffee, tea, or bring your own beverage, while working on your current stitching project. Stitchers of all experience levels are welcome! This is an open forum for crafters to share their projects, ask other stitchers for assistance or troubleshooting, and enjoy crafting company.
Work on your resume, edit your cover letter, or complete an online application during our job-seeker support hours. Our Public Services Librarian will provide dedicated support for job-seekers on most Wednesday afternoons. Get those pumpkins ready, our popular Book Character pumpkin contest is back again this year! Entries will be accepted from October 17-20 and voting will be October 21-29. Winners will be announced on October 31st. Decorate a pumpkin or gourd as your favorite book character. Pumpkins may be painted, dressed, accessorized but not carved. Please note that pumpkins that have holes in them tend to go bad really fast, so painting and accessorizing works best for this contest. Categories are: Youth/Family/Classroom (pumpkin is decorated as a group, extensive adult help is welcome in this category). Independent child (pumpkin decorated with only adult supervision, not help) Categories in independent child are: ages 4-7, 8-12 and 13-18.
Winners in each category will receive a gift basket with Halloween goodies. All children that enter will receive a book to keep.
Pick up a free take & make craft kit and paint your own spook-tacular ghost rocks! Crafters will need to supply their own paint brush, all other materials are included. Registration is encouraged to reserve your kit. Registration opens October 10.

Mariposa Park Nature Playscape Trail
Join the Newton Public Library and Jasper County Conservation for a special storytime at Mariposa Park! The Nature Playscape trail is at 7286 N 67th Ave E, Kellogg. We will meet at the picnic shelter and head out onto the trail for a special storytime about sounds and music in nature. For ages 3-5, siblings are welcome. No registration required. Feel free to bring a picnic lunch for after storytime.

The master of Gothic horror comes from beyond the veil to talk about his life and share his best stories and poetry including “The Masque of the Red Death”, “The Raven” and “The Tell Tale Heart.” This program is free to attend and open to the public.

Centre for Arts & Artists
The City of Newton’s Parks & Recreation and Centre for the Arts & Artists are partnering up to invite teens ages 12-16 to create a masterpiece of their own! Teens will have three days to create their masterpiece followed by an open house art gallery for the public to see the artists' creations! The artists are strongly encouraged to attend the art gallery as it is a great real-world experience of what an art gallery open house is like and to hear feedback on their artwork.

The Trunk or Treat Nightmare in Maytag Park will take place on Monday, October 31 from 5 to 8:30 p.m. Stroll through Maytag Park wearing your costumes and enjoy treats, fun photo ops, a lighted display, and so much more.
